SPARKLER ACTIVITIES
At Sparkies, our rising fours are known as SPARKLERS.
What do we do to prepare Sparklers for Reception?
These sessions include:
- Use of specialised books, games, toys and technology;
- Simple STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) experiments - encouraging curiosity and inquisitive language!
- Phonics sessions;
- Sparkler's-say committee - Learning is dependent on the interests of our children, so we listen to what our children say and plan all our lessons around what ignites that SPARK of curiosity!
- Supervised outings to local places of interest;
- Home projects to reinforce the connection between home and learning;
- And many, many others!
Children are naturally curious, at Sparkies we respond to this natural curiosity and turn it into a passion for learning!
- We use the Jolly phonics system as well as letters and sounds set by the government as guidelines.
- We use simple mathematical concepts, sequencing and predictions by using a variety of tools and games.
- We extend our learning through a variety of resources to promote fine motor skills, mark making and problem solving.
- We use our local community to extend our projects for example: writing letters, visiting the local post office, buying a stamp and posting letters back to the nursery, monitoring the time it takes for their return.
- We look to nature for inspiration to learn and then extend our adventure! we might plant a potato in our garden, talk about harvesting and then visit a farm to pick our own fruits and vegetables.
During the Sparkler year, we introduce Beat Baby for children to look after. Baby Beat is a wonderful furry asset and we all enjoy exploring and reading about his adventures with the Sparklers.
Sometimes the Sparkler activities are extensions of the daily activities experienced by their younger peers. We have found that one of the delightful effects of this is that the Sparklers become mentors to their younger peers.
